REVIEW: "Susan, Operation Our Town scavenger hunt was a HUGE success at my family reunion!! We ALL - everyone - had a great time. The interaction was exactly what was needed. You learn a lot about people through such activities. I can't wait to try another one of your hunts. By the way I liked to read what others thought about the product before buying and I love that you communicate with your audience - it adds such a personal touch! Wonderful!" - Andrea Johnson, Baltimore, MD
HOW IT WORKS: This is an outdoor walking or driving scavenger hunt suitable for any area with shops and businesses (including malls). *This scavenger hunt will work in both large and small communities. You may need to do a bit of editing for very small towns but it's easy to do.
TO CUSTOMIZE YOUR SCAVENGER HUNT GAME: All our scavenger
hunt games are formatted in Microsoft Word which means you can
EASILY edit them to personalize the scavenger hunt for your event and add in your own custom challenges.
For example, if you select the Our Town hunt for a birthday party,
you can have the teams make a birthday present as one of the team
projects. If you're going to a place you've never been, search
the Internet for the "city name" and the results will
provide you with informative web sites you can use to plug in location
specific challenges. You'll also find some nice suggestions on our testimonial
A note about doing this hunt in a mall: Some folks have told us that their local mall considered the scavenger hunt an "event" and it was therefore prohibited; others have told us that picture taking is not allowed. To be on the safe side, check with the mall before showing up to do this hunt. Photography in public places article.
You'll need about 2 hours minimum for this hunt. Your group will be divided into teams of three to 10 people. Each team will receive a collection bag containing various supplies. They will then embark on the scavenger hunt, taking pictures, obtaining specific items and completing a creative team project. All the challenges are worth valuable points and there are some bonus point challenges as well. At the conclusion of the hunt, the teams will prepare an optional final presentation while you “grade” their challenge sheets to find the winners based on point total (award certificates are included with this hunt). THE WINNING TEAM will have had the most fun as a team while collecting the most points.
For the TEAM BUILDING VERSION of this scavenger hunt, there will be an added mid-hunt meet where additional challenges (included) will be given out and team members my move to other teams or team roles will change. At the conclusion of the hunt, after the teams present a creative and inspiring final presentation, we recommend you have a debriefing session using the team assessment form included with your kit. TEAM OBJECTIVE: Form an efficient, effective and enthusiastic team that communicates well, works by consensus and has a definite plan of action to complete this adventure hunt. The team that does this the best will be your outstanding team of the day. (While points matter, outstanding team work matters more for this version of the game.)
EXAMPLES: Our Town hunt includes 20 photo challenges (they'll make GREAT memories of the day), find items (15), a fun and creative project and a final team presentation (optional). We provide lots of different types of challenges to complete to keep it interesting, engaging and fun, fun, fun!
Collect an unusual, clever or creative item. Bonus points to the team that brings back the most unusual item.
2. Have your most artistic team member collaborate with someone you've never met to draw a picture. Take a picture of them in action.
3. Take a picture of 3 of your team members with a construction worker. You must be in the classic Village People "YMCA" pose.
NUMBER OF TEAMS or PARTICIPANTS: Unlimited number of teams with a minimum of three to a maximum of 10 people per team. We do recommend one facilitator/helper for every two to three teams to keep things running smoothly, especially when you grade team efforts and tally up completed challenges.
What if you only have a few people participating in scavenger hunt? Instead of dividing them into teams, you can keep them all on one team and have them race against the clock, giving the single team a time limit to complete each section of the hunt (photos, find items, etc.), report back to you for the next section and so on until the hunt is complete.
LENGTH OF THE HUNT: Two to four hours, depending on the size of your group*: Five minutes for opening instructions; a minimum of 1 1/2 hours for the scavenger hunt and about 30 minutes or more for the grading, (optional) team presentations and awards presentation. *The more teams you have, the more time it will take. Also if you're driving to various locations instead of just walking, you'll need to add in time.
For the team building versions of the hunts, allow two to four+ hours, depending on the size of your group: 15-20 minutes for opening instructions, warm up game and team organization; 1 1/2 - two hours for the hunt and about 30 minutes (or more) for grading, team presentations, awards and optional but recommended team assessment discussion.
PRE-HUNT PREP TIME: For up to six teams, you can put our scavenger hunts together in about four to six hours (includes shopping for supplies, reading the scavenger hunt and prepping the materials); as you add teams, you'll need to add time to the pre-hunt prep. You mostly need to print (and perhaps edit) the documents included with the kit, pack the collection bags and you'll need to get team prizes and other inexpensive supplies like clipboards and pens. Our facilitator guide provides a supply checklist for you. *You will need these software programs.
