Mafia Murders Murder Mystery Dinner – Fun Ideas to Steal

1920's gangster murder mystery gameHere are some creative ideas from one of our customers for our Mafia Murders Murder Mystery Dinner Game.

“We hosted our Mafia Murders mystery dinner event at our 55+ community for a sell-out crowd of 90 people. It was a huge success! Many of the audience dressed in 20’s attire for the event.

Love her ideas here >>

Our dinner included “Knock out punch”, “Brush with Death” bruschetta and “Sinister” salad, “Choosy Floozy” chicken parmesan and “Hotsy Totsy” herb pasta, “Da Bomb” spumoni, with courses served between acts.

We had programs printed with cast “thumbnail” pictures on a family tree to help the audience identify who was who.

Prizes of “Godfather’s Hooch”, airline size bottles of Canadian Club with labels featuring our Godfather, were prizes for the table(s) with the most correct answers.

I just want to close by saying that these murder mysteries are definitely appropriate for multiple age groups. Our social committee will consider doing another next year. Thanks again for your help in having a successful murder mystery evening!”  – Linda Rymer

1920’s Theme Party

Are you having a 1920’s theme party (like The Mafia Murders murder mystery dinner party game we offer on our website?)

Well, here are some 1920’s era decorating tips, recipe ideas and costume ideas to help with your planning.

First of all, these stores (and others like them) are great places to find a lot of what you need for decorating and accessorizing for a theme party:

  • Dollar stores
  • Hobby Lobby
  • Michael’s Craft stores
  • Party City

1920s decorating ideas

Color scheme: Black and white, sparkly and glitzy: White and black party streamers, table cloths, napkins and even black and white feather boas along with strings of pearls create a nice look.

Dim the lights and add candles to create a speakeasy atmosphere.

Use unlabeled wine bottles or even Coke bottles if you can find them for wine on your dinner tables (it was Prohibition after all)

Hang posters of 1920’s gangsters and flappers from Amazon. Last time I checked they had a life-sized cardboard cutout of a gangster and flapper.

While you’re there do a search 1920’s music on Amazon. They have a wonderful selection.

I also found these cool 1920’s Gangster Mug Shot Glasses on Amazon as a possible gift idea for your guests.

Do a general search for gangster props and 1920s props to see what else you can find on Amazon.

1920’s costumes:

Men:

  • Double-breasted suites (pin-strip if you have one)
  • Carnations in the lapel
  • Fedora
  • Hanky in your pocket

Women:

  • Almost any sleeveless dress with a drop waist or no waist.  Tie a fringy shawl around your waist for a nice flapper look.  I’ve had great success finding these types of dresses in 2nd hand, used clothing stores.
  • Long pearls.
  • Headband* with a feather or without.  *You can easily make this headband.  Go to the notions section of a craft or sewing store and look for piping or edging material.  It’s usually stretchy and has sparkly gold or silver do-dads but anything fancy looking will fit the bill. You can also use a scarf.  Tie the bow part on one side of your head (not the back).
  • Boas.
  • Long, elbow-length gloves.
  • Cigarette holder.
